Ventilation in a building is the purposeful supply and removal of air to and from any space by natural or forced (mechanical) means.

How do smoke vents function?

Smoke vents, in their most basic form, are openings, such as windows or skylights, that allow smoke and hot air to escape.

While fire can be terrible and frightening, smoke is even more deadly. In the event of a fire, smoke ventilation systems are designed to allow smoke to escape the building, limiting smoke inhalation and fire damage.

Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) systems are a form of smoke vent that opens automatically when a fire is detected, providing a path for smoke to leave rather than build up in a confined location. When the sensors detect a fire or smoke in the building, a roof vent or window is opened to allow the smoke to escape. They are superior to manual smoke vents that must be opened by hand – something that isn't always achievable in the case of a building fire – because they don't require any intervention.
