120 People Evacuated during Restaurant Fire

Nobody expects a crisis or an emergency, especially one that directly affects them, their employees, and their business. However, the basic truth is that disasters and emergencies can hit anybody, at any time, and in any location. Your company may be obliged to evacuate you and your staff when you least expect it.

This truth was seen on Thursday afternoon, February 4, 2022. A fire ripped through the Fahrenheit Seafood and Grill Restaurant in Edenvale, Gauteng, destroying the reception, bar, kitchen and the main dining area.

When the fire broke out, there were an estimated 70 customers and close to 50 employees inside the restaurant. Fortunately there were no injuries.

The fire started on the roof, which is built of thatch, according to the restaurant owner, Nick Livanos. "The security staff acted quickly to ensure that everyone followed the safety evacuation process," Livanos stated.

Your emergency action plan must include the following items at a minimum:

  • A preferred method for reporting fires and other emergencies;

  • An evacuation policy and procedure;

  • Emergency escape procedures and route assignments, such as floor plans, workplace maps, and safe or refuge areas;
