Fire Blankets for Ventilation Ducts

A fire blanket is a flexible sheet of material usually constructed with wool and fiberglass layers that is uniquely designed to smother a fire. Fire blankets come in many various shapes and sizes, as well as composition. Fire blankets used in commercial and industrial settings, especially in ventilation ducts can come in a variety of coatings and composites.

The types of fire blankets used in ventilation systems are called duct wraps or Fiberfrax®. Fiberfrax® is a passively working fire protection insulation system, which adequately protects the ductwork by reducing the spread of fire.

A typical Fiberfrax® blanket uses ceramic fibers as the base for the fire resistant substances that comprise the blanket and are available in a considerable variety of chemistries and sizes which can make the fire blanket useful in many commercial and industrial applications. These fibers boast high temperature stability, low thermal conductivity, low heat storage, excellent thermal shock resistance, ideal lightweight, and corrosion resistance, not to mention it can withstand temperatures up to 1260 degrees Celsius.

Fiberfrax® blankets and similar products offer superb insulating abilities, as they are manufactured from alumina-silica materials that do not conduct heat. Fiberfrax® is traditionally used in commercial and industrial fire protection systems across the country.
