Converting a Pneumatic to an Electromechanical Control System

At a well-known mall, SFE Services recently installed a new smoke ventilation system. A pneumatic control system powered the original ventilation system.


Most Smoke Control Systems are driven by:

  • Pneumatic control system.

    • CO2 bottles Control System.

    • Compressor Control System.

  • Electrical control system.


Pneumatic Control Systems in Detail:


A pneumatic system uses compressed air or gas to transmit and con

trol energy.


Most pneumatic systems require a constant supply of compressed air from an air compressor or CO2 bottles in order to function. Air is drawn from the atmosphere and stored in a receiver, which is a high-pressure tank, in an air compressor system. CO2 bottles are used in a pneumatic control system. This is the most basic method. It comprises of a frame with an emergency mechanical pushbutton and a few CO2 bottles attached to a valve that drills them in the event of a fire.

Air or gas is delivered to the smoke

ventilation system via a network of pipelines and valves in each of these choices.


The performance of air pneumatic systems is limited by the amount of compressed air available because they rely on the force provided by compressed air. The air supply to the system may not be correct since the amount of air fluctuates when compressed or heated, decreasing the system's overall accuracy.


An Electrical Control System:


A control panel powered by alternating current at 220-volts makes up this system.


from the installation's electrical supply The installation runs in direct current through CABLES from this box to the smoke vents. An electric motor operates the smoke vents' opening mechanism. Typically, the control panel has its own built-in UPS. The Smoke Evacuation System continues to work normally even if the enclosure loses electricity.


This panel can be connected to a detecting signal, causing the smoke vents to open automatically in the event of a fire, which is important to consider when developing a Smoke Evacuation System.


An electrical system is more expensive than a pneumatic system since the cable and electric motor of the smoke vents are more expensive than the copper pipe and pneumatic piston, respectively. This control technology, on the other hand, requires less upkeep, avoiding the legalization of pneumatic installation in industry.
